Bode Miller Is a Rare Olympic Bird

Vancouver, British Columbia

On Saturday, in what could be his last run at the Winter Olympics, Bode Miller will try to win his first medal in an Olympic men's slalom event.

No matter what happens, this Olympics has already cemented Mr. Miller's place as the most successful skier in U.S. history. If he can pull off a win in the slalom, he'll rival French legend Jean-Claude Killy as one of the greatest and most versatile Olympic skiers of all time.

Saturday may be a last chance for a glimpse at a skier rarer than most people realize. Heading into Saturday's slalom, Mr. Miller, 32 years old, has five Olympic medals, including one gold, spread among four of skiing's five disciplines.

Mr. Miller broke onto the scene as a slalom specialist in the mid-1990s, wearing the first generation of curved skis to help him power through turns in a way no one had before. His two silver medals at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002 came in combined and giant slalom.

As he shifted his focus to speed events, coaches worried his reckless style would lead to a career-ending injury.

That didn't happen, and now, far beyond the age when most skiers win slaloms, Mr. Miller still judges himself by how quickly he can dance through the gates.

"It's always been my dream to win in slalom," Mr. Miller said after taking his first gold medal in the combined in Vancouver. "I've always said, when you're skiing well, there's nothing better than slalom."

Mr. Miller hasn't said he'll retire after the Olympics, and now that he's winning again, he has suggested he may well return to the World Cup circuit.

Professional skiing is a grind, both mentally and physically, and especially for Americans—who often spend up to seven months far away from home each year. Mr. Miller has noted how his desire to spend time with his 2-year-old daughter often outweighs his desire to ski faster than anyone else. So it seems unlikely that Mr. Miller will still be on the slopes in Sochi, Russia, in 2014.

He has won five world-championship medals and 32 World Cup races, but he also has 68 World Cup podiums and two overall World Cup titles. That's a résumé that rivals that of France's Mr. Killy—who is still considered the gold standard of skiing. Mr. Killy famously swept the alpine competitions at the 1968 Olympics.

"You're just not going to see a skier like Bode come around ever again," said Tom Kelly, the longtime spokesman for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. "A guy who's won World Cup races, overall titles and Olympic medals. That just doesn't happen."

By now, Mr. Miller's return to the U.S. team last year is part of skiing lore. He'd quit two years earlier to form his own, self-financed team because he didn't like the way Team USA was being run.

This came a year after Mr. Miller had boasted of his late-night carousing during the Turin Olympics, where he won no medals, despite hype that made him a favorite in all five competitions before the Games.

Mr. Miller said this week his behavior in Turin was his way of taking back his identity after seeing it hijacked by the media.

Last spring, Sasha Rearick, the men's alpine coach for the U.S. team, called Mr. Miller and asked if he wanted to return. Mr. Miller told him no thanks and spent the summer playing golf and fooling around on the beach with his daughter.

"After everything I'd done, I thought I deserved some time not trying to kill myself every day," Mr. Miller said.

But by September, Mr. Miller was considering a comeback and flew to Utah to discuss it with Mr. Rearick. "I saw the problems he'd had in the past that forced him to leave the team as opportunities," said Mr. Rearick.

He welcomed Mr. Miller back even though a World Cup season was just six weeks away and Mr. Miller was completely out of sync physically with his teammates. "I was pretty much on my own," Mr. Miller said.

He'll be on his own on the hill Saturday, trying to win that elusive slalom medal.

Asia Slips on U.S. Fears

SINGAPORE--Asian stock markets were lower Thursday as uncertainty over the U.S. debt ceiling debate continued to weigh market sentiment, while concerns over a stronger yen dragged exporters in Tokyo.

"The scary part of the story is the fact that markets have not priced-in the U.S. defaulting on its debt. Should the unthinkable happen in the next week then a throw back to the chaos of 2008 would again become a reality," said CMC Markets analyst Ben Le Brun. "Should the majority of opinion be correct and the U.S. does avoid a default, global markets do appear as if they are positioned for a relief rally of sorts. Until then investors should brace themselves for more pain."

Japan's Nikkei Stock Average fell 1.1%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 slid 1.2%, South Korea's Kospi Composite lost 0.8% and New Zealand's NZX-50 fell 0.5%.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 19 points in screen trade.

In Tokyo concerns over a stronger yen and weak market sentiment outweighed positive earnings reports.

Among exporters Canon fell 1.4%, Sony fell 1.0% and Toyota Motor fell 1.8%. Concerns over a stronger yen also weighed Nissan Motor, which fell 1.1% despite posting stronger-than-expected first-quarter earnings.

Panasonic bucked the market trend, rising 1.4% on its decision to sell subsidiary Sanyo Electric's household appliance business to China's Haier Group.

In Sydney shares were lower tracking bearish offshore leads, with resource and financial stocks underperforming amid downbeat market sentiment.

Among resources stocks BHP Billiton fell 1.6% and Rio Tinto fell 1.5%. Among financials ANZ Bank slid 1.6% and Macquarie tumbled 3.7%.

Wesfarmers fell 2.3% after its food and liquor sales missed expectations.

In foreign exchange markets the euro was steady against the U.S. dollar as investors mulled concerns on European debt after S&P downgraded Greece's long-term sovereign credit rating to 'CC' from 'CCC', and uncertainty over the U.S. debt ceiling debate with the August 2 deadline looming and potential U.S. credit ratings downgrades on the horizon.

The single currency was at $1.4371 against the dollar, from $1.4363 late Wednesday in New York, and at ¥112.04 against the yen, from ¥112.02. The dollar was at ¥77.95, from ¥77.98.

September Japanese government bond futures were up 0.10 at 141.79 points.

Spot gold was at $1,615 per troy ounce, up 90 cents from its New York settlement on Wednesday. September Nymex crude oil futures were down 41 cents at $96.99 per barrel on Globex.

CN627 Atlas V Launch - SIBRS GEO

CN627 Atlas V Launch - SIBRS GEO

Trip to the Kennedy Space Center, May 2011. Launch of SBIRS-GEO-1 on an Atlas V 401. From Wikipedia:

The Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) is a consolidated system intended to meet the United States' infrared space surveillance needs through the first two to three decades of the 21st century.

SBIRS is an integrated "system of systems" that will include satellites in geosynchronous orbit (GEO), sensors hosted on satellites in highly elliptical orbit (HEO), and ground-based data processing and control. SBIRS ground software integrates infrared sensor programs of the U.S. Air Force (USAF) with new IR sensors. SBIRS continues to struggle with cost overruns, with Nunn-McCurdy breaches occurring in 2001 and 2005. By September 2007, the expected project cost had increased to $10.4 billion.

This was my secong outing to this well photographed location near Hull. I got the usual lighthouse, and post leading into the water shots but one of my goals was to come back with something different that I personally hadn't seen captured before. I noticed this post with what I thought looked like a heart shaped hole in it and that I would try and get a good image from that using depth of field.

I also took a few lighthouse images that were different from the normal shots you would expect to see from this location. I will post these shortly.

All the best,

Nick

Canada Wins Gold in Women's Hockey

[womenshockey022] AFP/Getty Images

Members of the Canadian team celebrate their win.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Canada's women upheld their half of the bargain in letting the world know who owns hockey Thursday, blanking archrival the United States 2-0 in their Olympic gold-medal game.

The game was the reverse of the U.S.-Canada men's game Sunday. This time Team USA carried the play only to be stymied by the Canadian goaltender. All the scoring took place in the first period, when Canada got two opportunistic goals from Marie-Philip Poulin. Canada rode goalie Shannon Szabados the rest of the way.

"My teammates were unbelievable today," Ms. Szabados said. "This is an incredible moment."

The game was a tribute to what women's hockey can be when played by two equal opponents. This Olympic tournament showed once more how the U.S. and Canada are eons ahead of other countries in women's hockey, a fact reflected in numerous blowouts and questions about whether there were enough players around the world to merit inclusion in the Olympics.

But when played by two teams as equally skilled as the Americans and Canadians, the women's game was perfectly fast-paced and thrilling. Passes zipped tape to tape, slapshots boomed and both goalies acrobatically knocked away pucks or snagged them with darting gloves.

"For sure it's good hockey," Canadian men's hockey defenseman Brent Seabrook said during the first-period intermission. "It's really exciting."

Fans also passionately supported the game, holding banners that read "She Shoots, She Scores" and "I Believe in Women's Hockey."

The game started slowly but the U.S. began a relentless forecheck, which pinned the Canadian defense in their zone much of the night. Forwards Hilary Knight and Caitlin Cahow stormed the net several times, but Ms. Szabados kept turning them away, often relying on her fast glove hand to snag pucks out of the air.

The U.S. had an even better chance to get into the game in the second period when Canada was called for delay of game by shooting the puck over the glass. A few seconds later, it was called again for the same penalty – a highly unusual sequence of events that gave the U.S. a five-on-three power play for almost two minutes. But between the Canadians' deft shot-blocking and too much U.S. passing, the danger passed.

By the third, it was clear Canada was planning to hang on and the game became a series of efforts by the U.S. team to penetrate the Canadian zone, with Canada countering when the U.S. defense pinched too deep.

The medals ceremony was touching, with the bronze-medal Finnish team clearly thrilled to have won a medal. The U.S. women, meanwhile, were despondent, many in tears. When U.S. fans began chanting "U.S.A., U.S.A.," the Canadian-dominated arena took up the chant as well.

But the roof went off when gold was handed out. Looking down from the skyboxes was the Canadian men's team. They must get through the semifinals Friday to reach their gold-medal game to hold up their end of the national bargain.

Early morning walk, North Cornwall

On Monday morning I set out at dawn and walked about 4 miles along the North Cornwall Coast Path east of Port Isaac then returned along the same route. It was marvellous! In the three hours I was out on the rugged coast path enjoying this magnificent scenery I didn't come across a single other person. Most of the tourists seem to lie in bed until midday nursing their hangovers rather than enjoy the beauty of the North Cornwall coast.

Stoer Lighthouse

photo

Stoer lighthouse

Landscape photography of Scotland by Pete Barnes www.petebarnesphotography.co.uk/2011/06/29/a-few-more-sco...

The lighthouse at Stoer is in the far North West of Scotland and we went there from the little village of Kylesku. There is a nice walk along the cliffs to an impressive stack, one of many on this coast, climbers love them! Anyway you can park quite close to the lighthouse so it is at the beginning of the walk. As I was there at around noon I knew the light wasn’t going to be very dramatic so I had an idea I would do a black and white conversion. I liked the sweeping line of the beach below leading to the cliffs and the lighthouse all under a dark blue (black after the conversion) sky. I had a hard ND graduated filter on my 16-35 lens aligned to the horizon, I also put on the big stopper to slow the shutter to 30 seconds and get the water movement. As it was quite bright I couyld keep the aperture small (f/16) and the ISO low (160). I did the conversion using silver efex and tweaked it slightly in PS as I wanted a bit of detail in the shadows cast by the cliffs. I liked the rain cloud out to sea positioned over the lighthouse so I dodged and burnt it a little in Photoshop.
