Bolton Wanderers twice came from behind to secure a remarkable victory that elevated them to sixth place in the Premier League. Yet Aston Villa have only themselves to blame for losing a game in which innumerable chances including a penalty midway through the second half that would have given them a comfortable cushion.

England defender Gary Cahill, an outstanding performer at the back for Bolton this evening, was the scoring hero on this occasion at the Reebok Stadium where he twice achieved parity for Wanderers in an absorbing encounter. Substitute Ivan Klasnic then emerged to secure a late winner, Bolton's first victory in nine games against Villa.

Yet it would have been so different had visiting striker Darren Bent not scorned a host of golden opportunities after giving his team an early lead. Then the Villa captain Ashley Young saw his second half penalty saved by the Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and Villa eventually paid the penalty.

It had all started so well for the visitors when their early dominance commenced as early as the fourth minute when Bent missed a simple opportunity. However he atoned in the 15th minute when, he tapped in at the far post after Kyle Walker completed a fine run with a well placed cross from the right.

Seven minutes later Bent struck an upright but in first half added time Cahill scored the first of his brace when heading in a Martin Petrov corner from the right.

Stewart Downing missed a further opportunity for the visitors shortly after the resumption and then, in the 55th minute, Bent had two chances in quick succession, the first blocked by Cahill, the second saved by Jaaskelainen. Villa restored their lead in the 64th minute, Downing crossing from the right for Marc Albrighton to finish beyond the far post.

Then, when home defender David Wheater fouled Ashley Young, the Villa captain saw his spot kick saved by Jaaskelainen and after Cahill had achieved home parity for the second time following a Stuart Holden corner Klasnic came on to score from close range three minutes from the end to give Bolton their hard earned victory.
