Cardiff City fans want Wales striker Craig Bellamy to be the next manager following sacking of Dave Jones

Craig Bellamy is likely to be the preferred choice of Cardiff City supporters to become the club’s new manager following the dismissal of Dave Jones on Monday.

The Championship club announced Jones’s departure following a seven-day review into a season that finished with defeat by Reading in the play-off semi-finals this month.

Bellamy, 31, who spent last season on loan at Cardiff from Manchester City, is being linked with the post along with Chris Hughton, Alan Curbishley and even Martin O’Neill.

Lack of experience is almost certain to count against Bellamy’s chances of taking the job but there were suggestions last night that the striker could still return to Wales next season in a joint assistant manager/player role.

Jones, the former Southampton and Wolves manager who had been with Cardiff for six years, was the longest-serving manager in the division. He took the club to the FA Cup final in 2008. However, with pressure from supporters mounting, chief executive Gethin Jenkins confirmed that it was time for a change.

“We would like to thank Dave Jones for his considerable efforts,” said Jenkins. “He leaves his post in the knowledge that he has left the club in a far better position than when he arrived.

“A search will now begin for a new manager, which will be led by myself and director Alan Whiteley.”

Jones’s time in charge of team affairs was punctuated by turmoil off the field, with the club facing winding-up orders, transfer embargoes and takeovers.

However, they appeared to have come through the other side with the construction of a new stadium and the arrival of new Malaysian investors to help the club negotiate their debts, estimated at £30million.

Cardiff were beaten by Blackpool in the 2010 play-off final and faltered again at the end of the present season.

Moth-eaten and of poor taxidermic quality, these specimens in the Queen Victoria museum, Launceston, are the final testiments on this island to a noble endemic species.

The last known moving images of a living Tasmanian tiger (thylacinus cynocepalus or thylacine) can be seen on the following clip. The tragic animal died alone in captivity at a Zoo in Hobart in 1936.

Ryan Giggs unmasked as gagging order footballer

Ryan Giggs unmasked as gagging order footballer

The law on privacy injunctions was thrown into further confusion after MP John Hemming defied a High Court judge to unmask Ryan Giggs as the footballer at the centre of a gagging order storm.

The Premier League footballer at the centre of the Twitter super-injunction row was today named as Ryan Giggs in the House of Commons by MP John Hemming.

By Gordon Rayner, and Steven Swinford 10:12PM BST 23 May 2011

John Hemming, a Liberal Democrat, used parliamentary privilege to disclose that Ryan Giggs had obtained an injunction to prevent details of an alleged adulterous affair being published.

Mr Hemming took matters into his own hands after 75,000 Twitter users and a Scottish newspaper named the Manchester United star as the player who had allegedly conducted a relationship with Imogen Thomas, a former reality television star. His intervention rode roughshod over a gagging order that was upheld in two hearings yesterday, as two judges insisted that Giggs should remain anonymous.

David Cameron had earlier put Parliament on a collision course with the judiciary by claiming that the current law on privacy orders was “unsustainable” since the whole country knew the identity of the player. The Prime Minister announced that he was setting up a committee urgently to consider how to address the issue, but he immediately came under pressure to act more swiftly and issue new instructions to the judiciary.

On a day of drama in the High Court and the Commons, a senior judge rejected the suggestion that he was “King Canute” as he tried to hold back a deluge of internet postings naming Giggs.

But Mr Hemming’s address to Parliament appeared to be a watershed moment in the growing rift between MPs and judges. He also named Giles Coren, a restaurant critic, as the journalist facing potential legal action after using Twitter to identify another footballer with a privacy order.

Mr Cameron had signalled an intention to grasp the nettle when he told ITV1’s Daybreak programme that “like everybody else” he knew the identity of the then unnamed footballer who had an alleged affair with Miss Thomas, a former Big Brother contestant.

He said: “It is rather unsustainable, this situation, where newspapers can’t print something that clearly everybody else is talking about, but there’s a difficulty here because the law is the law and the judges must interpret what the law is. What I’ve said in the past is, the danger is that judgments are effectively writing a new law which is what Parliament is meant to do.

“So I think the Government, Parliament, has got to take some time out, have a proper look at this, have a think about what we can do, but I’m not sure there is going to be a simple answer.” He added: “It’s not fair on the newspapers if all the social media can report this and the newspapers can’t, so the law and the practice has got to catch up with how people consume media today.”

During the course of the day, Mr Justice Eady turned down a fresh attempt, by the publishers of The Sun, to lift the ban on naming Giggs, arguing in the High Court that “the dam has not burst” and the courts could still afford him some protection.

Then, in a second application by the publishers, after Giggs had been named in Parliament, another judge, Mr Justice Tugendhat, again kept the gagging order in place.

He said: “The fact that tens of thousands of people have named the claimant on the internet confirms that the claimant and his family need protection from the intrusion into their private and family life the more you taunt someone, the more distressing it is.

“If (the order) can stop five people, if not 50,000, then that is to be achieved.”

The same judge defended privacy injunctions as he published his decisions for granting injunctions relating to Sir Fred Goodwin, the former RBS boss, and a second Premier League footballer.

Giggs, a 37-year-old father of two, took out his injunction a month ago to prevent newspapers disclosing an alleged lengthy affair with Miss Thomas, about which he had not told his wife, Stacey. John Whittingdale, the chairman of the Commons culture committee, had asked the Attorney General, Dominic Grieve, to address privacy injunctions, claiming that the law was being made to look “an ass”. Mr Grieve announced that a new committee of MPs and peers would investigate the use of gagging orders, saying: “A range of wider issues has been raised by the events of the past few months and especially the past weekend.

“We take seriously the need to ensure that we have the correct balance between privacy and freedom of expression.” Moments later Mr Hemming drew gasps in the Commons as he named Giggs, with one MP shouting out “disgrace”.

Mr Hemming later explained that he had decided to name the player to prevent people being jailed for gossiping about him, after Giggs last week tried to force Twitter to reveal the names of people who had broken the injunction.

He said: “When he sued Twitter and showed he was going to go after relatively ordinary people and try to prosecute them for gossiping about him on a matter of trivia, I think he has to be held to account for that.”

Later, he called on Mr Cameron to act straight away, saying: “They need to make it clear that people won’t be prosecuted for gossip on the internet, it shouldn’t be a criminal offence to embarrass a footballer.

“The Government needs to make its position on this clear.” Lord Oakeshott, the Lib Dem peer said: “Before judges sound off about parliamentarians flouting injunctions, they should consider very carefully how a single judge sitting at short notice can take the public interest properly into account. It’s very dangerous to challenge parliamentary privilege.”

Lord Oakeshott previously revealed that Sir Fred Goodwin’s super-injunction related to an alleged affair with a senior colleague,

However Lord Falconer, the former Lord Chancellor, urged caution.

He said: “He [David Cameron] needs to be saying that politicians should respect the rule of law whilst we wait for the committee to report.

“Politicians have the power in practice to wreck the law, and the reason we have judges deciding who is entitled to privacy is because they look at the facts and are not motivated by who is popular and who is not.”

Marbled Godwit

photo

Marbled Godwit

This was taken in far western Corson County, SD on May 22, 2011.

View On Black

From Wikipedia ~ The Marbled Godwit, Limosa fedoa, is a large shorebird.

Adults have long blue-grey hairy legs and a very long pink bill with a slight upward curve and dark at the tip. The long neck, breast and belly are pale brown with dark bars on the breast and flanks. The back is mottled and dark. They show cinnamon wing linings in flight.

Their breeding habitat is the northern prairies of western Canada-(canadian prairies), and the north central Great Plains, United States near marshes or ponds. They nest on the ground, usually in short grass.

In autumn, they migrate in flocks to the coasts of California, the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico and South America.

These birds forage by probing on mudflats, in marshes, or at the beach (see picture below). In short grass, they may pick up insects by sight. They mainly eat insects and crustaceans, but also eat parts of aquatic plants.

Their numbers were reduced by hunting at the end of the 19th century. Although they had recovered somewhat since that time, their population has declined in recent times as suitable habitat is used for farming.

Nieve, 26, won the second grand tour stage of his career just 24 hours after Basque team Euskaltel-Euskadi celebrated their first ever stage win at the Giro after Igor Antón, another climbing specialist, won on Monte Zoncolan.

Garzelli, a former winner of the Giro, finished second 1 minute 41 seconds behind Nieve who took seven hours 27 minutes and 14 seconds to complete the brutal stage.

Alberto Contador finished third to retain the maglia rosa, the leader's pink jersey, 10secs later.

Michele Scarponi came in 6sec behind Contador to leapfrog fellow Italian Vincenzo Nibali, seventh on the stage at 3min 34sec, into second in the overall standings.

Nibali is third ahead of Frenchman John Gadret while Antón, who started the day third overall, dropped to fifth after finishing outside the top 10.

Nieve's efforts saw him climb to sixth overall.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says Carlos Tz is staying put and laughs off Cristiano Ronaldo talk

Roberto Mancini, the Manchester City manager, remains adamant that Carlos Tévez will stay at the club while laughing off links with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Italian caught most observers on the hop immediately after Tuesday's 3-0 Premier League win over Stoke when he claimed Tévez had told him he wanted to stay at the City of Manchester Stadium.

However, Tévez's representatives later claiming the striker had said nothing of the sort.

Even senior figures within the club wonder whether Tévez's trusted advisor Kia Joorabchian is trying to find an alternative suitor, who would be willing to pay the vast transfer fee and wages the South American would command.

However, as he looked ahead to Sunday's trip to Bolton, Mancini remains determined that Tévez is not about to make his final appearance for the club.

"I don't think it will be Carlos' last game," said Mancini.

"On Tuesday, I told you all my opinion and I am sure about this. But I can't continue to have a press conference to answer this question.

"I have spoken with Carlos. I have spoken with him many times in the last weeks and I don't need to speak with him again."

Mancini is not entirely convinced about quotes emerging from Argentina, attributed to Tévez, that the former West Ham star views his future as being elsewhere.

"I don't know if he has said these things," he said.

"Sometimes I have spoken to journalists in Italy and when the comments come back here, it is something completely different.

"I understand it can happen because of the translation.

"We have many important players; Carlos, Yaya Toure, David Silva, James Milner, Nigel de Jong. We want them all to stay here."

Meanwhile, Mancini has ruled out the chances of making a big-money move for Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

After two seasons without any significant silverware since he moved to Real Madrid, it has been claimed Ronaldo is ready to leave the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

A £150 million price tag is said to have been put on a player who cost Real a world record £80 million when he left Manchester United in 2009.

But Mancini laughed at suggestions he might be interested.

"We have signed Cristiano Ronaldo for £200 million," joked the Italian.

"I said after the FA Cup final, I would like to sign Ronaldo, [Lionel] Messi, [Cesc] Fabregas and [Andrés] Iniesta. I don't think it is possible.

"I don't know why this has come out. I don't know anything about it.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is a fantastic player but I don't think he will leave Real Madrid."

Manchester United’s delirious players shared their delight at helping the club to a record 19th title with millions of fans on Twitter as they celebrated into the early hours of Sunday morning.

United's squad decamped to the upmarket Rosso restaurant – part-owned by Rio Ferdinand – in Manchester city centre after their 1-1 draw with Blackburn, before moving on to the nearby Living Room bar.

Only Wayne Rooney, who preferred to celebrate at home with wife Coleen, was absent.

The 25 year-old posted a picture of the pair in their Prestbury home on his Twitter account on Sunday, but not being with his team-mates did not seem to stop the striker, scorer of the penalty which saw United pass Liverpool's record haul of titles, enjoying his achievement.

“A Scouser knocks Liverpool of there perch [sic],” he posted. “Haha. An evertoniian aswell. Yes. People. U can’t imagine how happy I am tonight. Believe.”

The forward, who had earlier chosen to use his chest hair to communicate his delight at reaching 19 titles, later expanded: “Utd til I die. Everton til I die. Believe. Come together. The beatles. Leg.”

It was Ferdinand, United’s Tweeter in chief, who kept fans up to date with developments at Rosso, where the players – led by Ryan Giggs – went through a litany of fans’ songs, serenading Gary Neville and urging Edwin van der Sar not to retire.

One message from the former England captain simply read: “Booooom.” He also posted pictures of team-mates Michael Owen and Nemanja Vidic celebrating.

Ferdinand was at pains to explain on Sunday morning. “Got to thank Rosso Restaurant for looking after the team and providing the fuel [food] for a long evening,” he posted.

Some, though, were not so chirpy. Owen admitted he was a “bit hungover” in a message posted at 7.30am, adding: “I’m off to a Christening today where I’m excited to be God parent to my best friends son notimetosoberup.”

Tax Boost Over 3 Years

TRENTON—New Jersey businesses would be spared a sudden major boost in the unemployment tax under legislation that calls for it to be phased in to help restore the state's depleted unemployment-insurance fund.

The Senate Labor Committee approved a bill Thursday that would spread the $750 million tax increase over three years.

"For the business community this bill is very positive and forward-thinking," said a co-sponsor, Sen. Fred Madden of Turnersville. "It will over the next three years let business owners have predictability."

In a rare display of bipartisan agreement, lawmakers from both parties recognized the need for a gradual tax-rate increase while businesses recover from the recession.

Unemployment remains at 9.3%, and small businesses report that they are still laying off, not hiring, workers.

The unemployment-tax rate is set automatically by how much the fund has in reserve in March of each year.

Because the fund has no reserve this year, and New Jersey is one of many states borrowing from the federal government to meet its unemployment claims, employers face the maximum tax-rate increase possible, about $177 more per employee, if the Legislature doesn't act.

The bill under consideration lowers the amount of the increase to about $58 more per employee, on average, on July 1, according to the most recent estimate from the Office of Legislative Services, the Legislature's research arm. Businesses that lay off workers frequently are assessed a higher per employee tax than those that don't.

Next year's increase would be about $76 per worker.

The business community endorsed the proposal.

Michael Egenton of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce said the bill averts "sticker shock" to businesses.

"Yes, your taxes are going up, incrementally, but it could have been a lot worse — you could have gotten a larger tax increase," he said.

New Jersey has borrowed more than $1.6 billion so far from the federal government to pay unemployment claims.

The fund went broke, in large part, because more than $4 billion was diverted from it to other programs, like hospital charity care.

One provision in the bill requires larger reserves to be built up before employer taxes are reduced. Voters last year approved a constitutional amendment banning future raids of the fund.

The full Assembly unanimously passed the bill Monday. It next moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Match fixing: Fifa and Interpol join forces in $20 million bid to fight match-fixing menace

Match fixing: Fifa and Interpol join forces in $20 million bid to fight match-fixing menace

Interpol secretary general Ron Noble will join Fifa president Sepp Blatter for the announcement in Zurich, at which Blatter will pledge to the funding package over the next 10 years to develop anti-corruption programmes specifically for football.

Senior investigators from Finland and Germany, where major match-fixing prosecutions involving hundreds of club and international matches are ongoing, will also be in Zurich to brief Blatter and secretary general Jerome Valcke on the threat corruption poses.

The Interpol agreement follows Telegraph Sport’s disclosure last week that Fifa investigators, working with Interpol, have begun a major inquiry into a global match-fixing ring it believes has been specifically targeting friendly internationals.

Wilson Raj Perumal, a convicted match-fixer who The Daily Telegraph revealed last week operated for at least seven months from a flat in the shadow of Wembley Stadium, is at the heart of the investigation. He is in custody in Finland on suspicion of bribing players to fix matches.

In Germany, meanwhile, police in Bochum have uncovered a massive fixing ring that they suspect of targeting more than 300 games. Ante Sapina, a Croatian convicted of match-fixing in 2005, is on trial with six other individuals charged with manipulating 47 specific matches.

Both the Finland and Bochum cases are understood to have raised numerous international leads that Fifa investigators, under head of security Chris Eaton, are pursuing in the largest inquiry yet undertaken by the governing body.

The Fifa funding will allow Interpol to develop preventative programmes for players, administrators and officials intended to raise awareness of the methods employed by fixers.

Educating young players is a priority, as is ensuring that administrators do adequate due diligence on third parties with whom they arrange matches. Educating and monitoring match officials is also crucial to preventing games being manipulated.

The ongoing investigation has revealed significant evidence that fixers have specifically targeted talented young players in 'grooming’ operations with a view to grooming them as potential future assets.

The focus on young players has prompted Fifa to step up prevention measures ahead of the under-17 and under-20 World Championships this summer in Mexico and Colombia.

“We have to be very careful to prevent them [match-fixers] having any impact on global competitions,” Eaton said. “We have the under-17 World Cup coming up in Mexico and we will be focusing on that with an education programme for national sides to alert them to the possibility that they might be approached by fixers.”

The funding will not be used for investigations, but it will strengthen ties with Interpol, which will in turn increase Fifa’s ability to target ongoing operations.

Anti-corruption investigations by Fifa and other sports bodies are constrained by a combination of factors. National law-enforcement agencies are restrained by jurisdiction and sport-related corruption is seldom a priority.

As a sports organisation Fifa also has limited powers to tackle figures who operate outside the game’s regulations.

The cross-border nature of the suspected fixing operation thrown up by the investigation so far has convinced investigators that they need the assistance from Interpol.

Gravel, grass, snow.

On the map I found a gravel road going all the way along the Eastern side of Lake Tekapo and I couldn't help but drive it. We saw lots of grass, lots of gravel, some water, snow, a river with a 4WD coming out of it, and near the end a few dairy farmers with thousands of cows.

A simple photo, a clich photo, a photo like comfort food.
