Dreams and Their Meanings in the Old Arab Tradition, by Yehia Gouda, deals with the ever-puzzling issue of dream interpretation from a perspective never tackled before—the ancient Arabs' system.

Drawing advantage from his thirty years of experience as a translator (AIIC member), journalist, and computer scientist, the author has combined, translated, abridged, and rewritten the three major references used by Arabs the world over to elicit the meaning of their most intimate dreams—the books of Ibn Sireen, Ibn Shaheen, and Al-Nabulsi.

Among other things, the author proves that the ancient Arabs, though vesting a special interest in spiritual dreams, were very much aware of the interaction between conditions in the body and dreams and of the mechanism of the subconscious mind. This was some fourteen centuries before Sigmund Freud dealt at length with the subject.

Also, this book surprisingly shows the close relationship between Islam and Judaism vis-a-vis dreams.
This work—which places a special emphasis on sex, death, and religion—should hold a special interest for psychologists, anthropologists, linguists, philosophers, and all those who study religion, the occult, or Oriental culture. But it is also likely to prove helpful to the lay reader in understanding his or her own dreams.

Illustrations are provided by France's visionary poet, writer, and painter, Mario Mercier.

Born in Egypt in 1943, YEHIA GOUDA began his career at the age of fifteen, working as a disc jockey at the then Egyptian Broadcasting Corporation. Since 1962 he has been a trilingual (Arabic, English, and French) news reader and radio and television announcer. Mr. Gouda has also been working as an international conference interpreter (AIIC member since 1977).

By virtue of his profession he has traveled extensively, interviewing and working with a host of heads of government and international celebrities. He has always been fascinated by dreams for a simple reason: his very often came true. While in Arabia he began the study that would lead to the publication of his first book: Dreams and Their Meanings in the Old Arab Tradition.
