After being abducted from a home for at-risk youth in the middle of the night by a twisted, murderous creature called an Indrik, a young girl named Charlotte with a talent for survival is taken (along with five other children) to an empty desert where it never becomes night and all the sand flows like water into a bottomless hole in the ground.
The only buildings in this wasteland are a beat-up old diner and a desecrated cathedral.
It soon becomes clear that Charlotte and the other children have only been brought to this dream country to cook and to clean. But her captor (who has a blade for a horn and tentacles for wings) eats only rare and fantastical creatures that pulse with psychic energy.
With the help of a tiny six-legged mentor rescued from the creature’s cooking pots, Charlotte begins to develop psychic powers of her own and learns to Fold, learning to tap into the recesses of her mind in order to perceive and wield psychic phenomena.
