Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings celebrates after scoring the game-winning goal in Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals against Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils.

NEWARK — Anze Kopitar scored a spectacular goal on a breakaway with 11:47 left in overtime Wednesday night and the Los Angeles Kings beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Kopitar faked a backhand shot, put the puck on his forehand and beat a prone Martin Brodeur.

Los Angeles has won all nine of its road games in the playoffs, an NHL record. The Kings are now one win shy of the NHL record for postseason road victories.

More importantly, they are three wins away from the franchise's first NHL title. They have won 11 consecutive road playoff games dating back to last season.

Colin Fraser scored in the first period for the Kings, the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference who beat the top three teams to get to their first Stanley Cup Finals since 1993.

Anton Volchenkov tied it late in the second period for New Jersey, the East's sixth seed.

Kopitar took a pass by Justin Williams from along the left wing boards and skated in alone on Brodeur. As soon as he rifled the puck into the net, he raised his hands and banged himself into the boards, facing the crowd off to Brodeur's right.

The veteran goaltender dejectedly skated off to the locker room as the rest of the Kings piled on Kopitar.

Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick finished with 17 saves in what was a relatively easy night. Brodeur had 23 saves as the Devils lost in overtime for just the second time this postseason; they have won four times. LA is 3-0 in overtime this spring.

WATCH: CEO Tim Cook says he's aiming to put 'own mark on Apple'

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. -- Apple chief executive Tim Cook sought to clarify his image Tuesday as leader of the gadget giant in the wake of his high-profile predecessor Steve Jobs.

Cook, speaking at the "D: All Things Digital" conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., noted some specific areas where Apple was operating in new ways under his leadership, by expanding philanthropic efforts and more closely scrutinizing its outsourced manufacturing in China.

But Cook also cited areas where Apple has no plans to change: Staying extremely secretive about new products and fighting to protect its innovations in court if necessary.

Cook became CEO of Apple last August, when company co-founder Jobs resigned in the midst of a battle with pancreatic cancer. Jobs died a little more than a month later.

Cook would only make passing mention of two of Apple's key Silicon Valley peers, Google and Facebook. When he was asked what he thinks of Google's innovations, he responded, "I love Apple's."

Jobs was known to have taken offense at Google's mobile phone technology, which spawned a series of devices that resemble Apple's iPhone. Apple has been embroiled in patent litigation with companies making phones based on Google's mobile software, including Samsung.

Cook was also asked about Facebook, the social network that has had a conspicuously small presence on Apple devices despite boasting more than 900 million users.

"I think we can do more with them," Cook said. "They have their way of doing things, but people can say that about us as well."

Another area of further innovation for Apple will be the Siri voice-command technology featured in the latest version of the iPhone -- which has been criticized for being gimmicky and of little practical use.

"There's more that it can do, and we have a lot of people working on this," Cook said.

Cook wore a black T-shirt beneath a collared shirt and jacket that recalled Jobs' signature black turtleneck and at one point appeared on the verge of being overtaken with emotion as he recalled the period of Jobs' death as "absolutely the saddest days of my life."

Late last year, Cook said, "somebody kind of shook me and said, it's time to get on."

Now, Cook said, he is at ease with making Apple his own.

"I've never really viewed or felt the weight of trying to be Steve, it's not who I am, and it's not my goal in life. I am who I am, and I'm focused on that, and being a great CEO," he said.

Cook also said the company has now begun "micro-managing" working conditions at China-based factories that manufacture products for Apple. One goal has been to reduce overtime. "We're measuring working hours for 700,000 people, I don't know of anybody else doing that," he said.

Cook said he is making his own decisions as a leader in part due to some advice Jobs gave him prior to his death, when he asked that Cook not rely on his legacy.

"He told me to never do that, to never ask what he would do," Cook said. "Just do what was right."

Callahan knows he must ‘C’s moment for Rangers in Game 6

He was relentless from his first shift to his last at the Garden on Wednesday, nothing less, and that was nothing less than is ever expected of and from Ryan Callahan.

And though Game 5 became a 5-3 defeat that leaves his team one misstep away from extinction, it simply served as yet another example of the Rangers’ captain leading by example.

“I felt good, and I thought as a line with Artie [Anisimov] and Dubi [Brandon Dubinsky] we were strong on the forecheck and were holding onto pucks the way we have to,” said Callahan, who crashed the net to score on a deflection off his skate early in the second period and recorded a game-high six hits in 20:01. “We have to continue to do that.”

Getty Images

TRYIN’ RYAN: Rangers captain Ryan Callahan won’t channel Mark Messier’s 1994 guarantee, but said he has to raise his level of play for the Rangers to survive tonight.

Callahan laughed when asked if he would issue a guarantee for this Game 6 the way a captain named Mark Messier had in 1994. He laughed again when asked if he had sought No. 11’s counsel on such matters, pausing to say “No,” before leaving the mass of cameras, microphones, recorders and notebooks behind at his locker.

“We say stuff, but we keep it in the room,” said this captain of the Blue Wall of Silence that has enveloped the Rangers under coach John Tortorella’s direction. “We have a lot of leadership in the room and a lot of character.

“We’ve been resilient all year and have come back in situations, which is what we have to do [in Game 6].”

The focus a few days ago was on Callahan’s lack of production. But with an empty-netter in Game 3 and then the goal on Wednesday, Callahan’s two goals against the Devils are second among forwards in the Eastern finals to Chris Kreider’s three goals. His 14 shots are second to Marian Gaborik’s 15 in the Battle of the Hudson. He leads the team with 19 hits in the series.

He leads the team, period.

“He did all he needed to do as a leader to try to get us a win right to the bitter end,” is how Tortorella evaluated the captain’s performance after Game 5 had ended. “And he’ll do the same the next game.”

The Rangers will need their best game of the playoffs tonight in order to make necessary Game 7 at the Garden on Sunday. They’ll need their best game of the season.

“I think we’re going to have to; they’re going to be a desperate team, too, to try and close it out on their home ice,” Callahan said. “We need to find that next level, that extra desperation.

“We’re going to have to bring our full 60 minutes and be at the top of our game to be successful and we realize that in here,” the captain said. “This is what you play for, elimination game in the playoffs, the conference finals.

“This is when players step up and have big games.”

Hofstra has shot at softball Series

It was more than seven years ago that Hofstra softball coach Bill Edwards was leading the Pride to another NCAA Tournament appearance. Having taken over in 1990, Edwards was in the midst of a run that would produced an NCAA-record 11 straight conference tournament titles.

The present was good and there was no reason to think the future wouldn’t be better. What Edwards didn’t know was the future was in the stands.

Olivia Galati, a native of West Babylon, N.Y., began going to Hofstra softball games with her parents when she was 13. As a promising high school pitcher, she ultimately decided that she wanted to play close to home and joined the team she used to dream of joining on the field.

“It wouldn’t have felt right if I went anywhere else,” Galati said. “I really felt like I belonged there. It was in my backyard. It was my hometown school.”

With one of college softball’s most dominant arms, Galati has led her hometown school to its first ever Super Regional, where the Pride (41-13) will play tonight at No. 19 South Florida (45-11) in the first game of a best-of-three series (7:00, ESPNU). Game 2 will be played tomorrow afternoon, with Game 3 to follow, if necessary. The winner will advance to the Women’s College World Series.

Galati has not lost since March 4 and is two wins away from setting the NCAA single-season Division I record of 33 consecutive victories. This season, the junior is 33-5 with a Division I-leading 0.91 ERA and 17 shutouts, while also leading the team with a .361 batting average.

“I think we have the one thing you have to have in our game and that’s a hot pitcher,” said Edwards. “You have to have a kid in the circle that has ice water in her veins and can throw a pitch at any time and hit the spot that has to be hit. When Olivia is on her game, she’s like Greg Maddux. She can move the ball a quarter of an inch at any time. She is very special.”

Although the Pride have tied a school-record with 20 straight wins, claiming 39 of their past 41 games, the star in the circle wasn’t enough to help the team avoid an 0-9 start to the season. Galati opened the season with four losses, and with three new starting infielders, the Pride struggled defensively.

But, the games were close, and somehow, the team knew success was too.

“We’re such a different team than we were in the beginning of the season,” Galati said. “We just wanted to win so badly. Once we got the first win, we were able to relax and stop pressing and realized we can do this and eventually it would come along.

“It has been a fun ride, but we’re nowhere near done.”

If that is true, Galati will be the reason. And her coach is confident placing history in her right hand, saying it is likely he could pitch his ace in every game.

“When you got the horse, you ride it,” Edwards said. “She is Secretariat. I’m just going to hitch my cart to her engine.”

PSAL Class A semifinals preview

NYPost.com softball beat writer Joseph Staszewski breaks down Thursday’s PSAL Class A softball semifinals 3:30 p.m. on Randall’s Island.

No. 1 Tottenville Pirates

Head coach: Cathy Morano

Record: 19-0

Player to watch: Jillian Regan

No. 4 Construction Red Hawks

Head coach: Marco Migliaccio

Record: 18-1

Player to watch: Britney Rodriguez

Outlook: It’s a battle of the PSAL’s premier program in Tottenville against a Construction team on a meteoric rise to the top. The Staten Island school has won seven of the last eight city crowns and the Red Hawks are in their second straight semifinal after moving up to the ‘A’ division two years ago.The two clubs have tangled before with the Pirates easily handling Construction, which owns a ‘B’ crown, 15-2 in a regular-season crossover game.

William Thomas

Francis Lewis and coach Bryan Brown meet Susan Wagner in the PSAL Class A semifinals Thursday.

Red Hawks ace Brittany Rodriguez was hit hard that day by the PSAL’s best lineup and Construction's defense was being revamped at the time. Construction, which beat Clinton just 3-2 in the quarterfinals, is hoping for the usually dominant windmiller to bounce back and its revamped defense to play a much cleaner game in the field. Construction has a lineup that can hit with Kailan Luciano and Amy Pirozek.

That’s no easy task with Cheryl Lopez, arguably the city’s top pitcher, in the circle. The junior ace has given up just three hits in three playoff starts, including a five-inning no-hitter against Bryant in the quarterfinals.

She is also one of the Pirates' top offensive threats in the middle of the order along with stud shortstop Jillian Regan and budding first baseman Nylah Ramirez is tough on any pitcher. The biggest plus for Tottenville is New Haven-bound leadoff hitter Jen Palase is starting to heat up at the right time.

No. 2 Susan Wagner Falcons

Head coach: Marco Altieri

Record: 17-2

Player to watch: Taylor Sarcone

No. 6 Francis Lewis

Head coach: Bryan Brown

Record: 16-3

Player to watch: Pricilla Lallave

Outlook: There are more storylines than you can count in this one. The game is a rematch last year’s quarterfinals where Francis Lewis staved off a wild Wagner rally to advance to the semifinals. The Patriots feel they are building an expectation to be in this round with a return trip while Wagner is making its fifth final four appearance in the last six years. Lewis last won a title in 2002, while the Falcons are looking for their first final appearance.

Wagner believes this is the year it breaks through. Ace Taylor Sarcone is having an all-city type season in the circle and at the plate and is one of the five boroughs' grittiest players. The Falcons have the offensive advantage with a deep lineup of speed and power led by Dayna Williams and Jennifer Greenberg. They have already knocked off league rival New Dorp and MSIT and are battle tested.

Lewis being in the semifinals is a bit of a surprise to most people outside of the Patriots. The Queens club is built around pitching and defense and scored three runs on bases-loaded walks in an upset of perennial power Madison in the quarterfinals. With the gutty Priscilla Lallave in the circle, Lewis has a chance to shut down any lineup. Younger sister Samantha Lallave is a versatile force at shortstop and provides speed on the bases. Alina Cerda is turning into a reliable bat.

A win by either team is a big step forward for the program.

Netflix claims it brought a million new viewers to 'Mad Men'

Don Draper (Jon Hamm), Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) and Ken Cosgrove (Aaron Staton) in a recent episode from the fifth season of "Mad Men."

BOSTON -- "Mad Men," now in its fifth season on AMC, is enjoying a big ratings boost thanks to Netflix, says the company's content boss, Ted Sarandos.

This year's debut episode attracted 3.5 million viewers, up more than a million from last season's 2.4 million average.

Sarandos, speaking at a panel at the cable industry's annual convention in Boston, took credit for the bump, citing Netflix viewership of the show's earlier seasons.

"These are people who had four years to watch the show, and didn't," he said, suggesting that they tuned in for the fifth season after catching up on Netflix.

Stories like this serve to bolster Netflix's claim that it can help TV networks garner viewers.

Sarandos' comments came as he was defending Netflix from the flip side of that argument -- that some networks, like Viacom's Nickelodeon, are being hurt because Netflix is making their content available online.

Signore's hot bat leads Preston past NDA into Archdiocesan semis

Jessica Signore made sure her Preston team celebrated a playoff win before they got to do the same for her birthday.

“I’m happy we won,” the 17-year-old shortstop said. “I’m happy I got a hit."

Signore was the Panthers leadoff hitter her first two seasons, but moved to the No. 3 spot this year. She showed off both skills in a 7-3 win over visiting Notre Dame Academy at Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park in the CHSAA Archdiocesan softball semifinals Saturday. She led off a two-run third with a single and scored a run, had an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth. Her team sang "Happy Birthday" after and celebrated with cupcakes.

“She’s just a real gamer," Preston coach Rachel Mazza said. “She shows passion, leadership. She is just a true captain.”

Mazza told her team before the contest that these were the games she prepared them for all year, by playing some of the city’s best squads. Preston lost in the quarterfinals last season and has not been able to break through into the diocesan final.

Both Mazza and Signore believe this team gives the Bronx school its best chance in recent years because of its versatility, even with the graduation of four-year star Laura Montalto. The Panthers (14-1) host defending champion Moore Catholic 2 p.m. Sunday in the semis. The Mavericks came back in the last inning to win two games against Preston back in late March and Mazza said her team will need to play better than it did against NDA to come away with a victory.

“We are very evenly matched,” she said. “They know they should have never given those games away.”

The CHSAA Bronx/Westchester division champion needed a boast after Notre Dame (3-10) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run single from Gabby Piscopo. Preston, with help from four walks, scored twice on a Gators throwing error in the second and Julianna Orrico and Kitty Lajqi both drove in runs in the third to extend the lead to 5-2. Panthers starter Megan Kelly allowed five hits and struck out five in five innings of work before Orrico came on in relief.

“When we see a team takes the lead it just sparks us even more that we got to hit,” Orrico said.

Gators coach Tony Curatolo left pleased with the strides his young team – three seniors, three freshmen – showed. He felt the third inning and the walks by starter Amanda Guarino helped take the momentum they had built away. His squad did get a run back in the fifth on a Leanne Forsyth double and had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh, but could not score.

“I thought we played well, not too many mistakes,” Curatolo said. “I’m happy with them. They are yong and we played tough all year.”

Tough is exactly what Preston is trying to be on Moore in the semifinal. Signore has been the epitome of that during her three years on the varsity. Even as her role has changed, the production has not.

“I like batting one or two, but being with a young team as a junior now they had to put me somewhere else," Signore said. "That third spot is good enough for me. If I can get those hits with people on base and bring them it that’s fine.”

Derby champ chases down ‘Bode’ again in Preakness

BALTIMORE — It’s Triple Crown or bust for I’ll Have Another, the streaking chestnut colt from California who duplicated his surprise come-from-behind score in the Kentucky Derby with another thrilling victory in yesterday’s 137th Preakness Stakes.

Under another perfectly judged ride by Preakness rookie Mario Gutierrez, the son of Flower Alley closed relentlessly through the stretch to nail front-running Bodemeister in the shadow of the wire, winning by a neck in 1:55.94 for the 1 3⁄16 miles before a record crowd of 121,309 on a sun-drenched day at Pimlico.

Unbeaten in four starts this year, I’ll Have Another now heads for the June 9 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, looking to become the first winner of the coveted Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. The last horse to go for the sweep was Big Brown in 2008.

“Now the pressure is going to intensify,” said I’ll Have Another’s owner, Paul Reddam. “A lot of horses have been in this position and it didn’t happen for them. We’re only two-thirds there. So we’ve got to be cool. If it happens, it happens.”

Bodemeister, favored at 8-5 in the Preakness after setting the pace and finishing second in the Derby, once again gunned to the lead under Mike Smith. This time, however, he set a much more reasonable pace (the first half-mile in 47.68 seconds as opposed to 45.39 in the Derby), chased by Creative Cause, with I’ll Have Another tracking them outside.

As they turned for home, Bodemeister shook loose to open a commanding lead. But I’ll Have Another rallied wide off the far turn and kept on coming for his historic victory, paying $8.40 as the second choice in a field of 11 3-year-olds. The exacta returned $18.60.

“What a ride!” winning trainer Doug O’Neill said. “I’m just numb. When I saw Mario get him in stride in mid-stretch, I just had faith he was going to get there.”

“It was kind of surreal,” said O’Neill’s brother Dennis, who picked out I’ll Have Another and purchased him for a bargain-basement $35,000. “Going into today, I thought he was a really good horse. After today, he proved he’s a great horse.”

For Reddam, the Preakness was a nail-biter.

“Going into the clubhouse turn, we were wide, and I said ‘uh-oh,’” he said. “The horse on the lead was running strong. I could see coming out of the [far] turn that it was going to be a dogfight between I’ll Have Another and Bodemeister. We had some ground to make up, and the other horses was not stopping.

“I wasn’t sure we would get there, but I knew that our horse had a lot of heart and a lot of fight. It wasn’t until about 20 yards from the wire that I thought we were going to win.”

Gutierrez, who patiently saved his best for the stretch run instead of pushing Bodemeister early, said, “My horse had a tremendous kick at the end. He’s an amazing horse, and I’m happy to be riding him.”

Bodemeister’s trainer Bob Baffert, a five-time Preakness winner, thought he had the race won again.

“When he turned for home, I really thought he was going to do it,” Baffert said. “He just got a little late at the end.

“The winner is a good horse. He’ll get the respect now that he deserves. It’s good for the sport.”

Following I’ll Have Another’s Derby victory, the media spotlight fell on O’Neill, and he has come under some harsh criticism for past racing violations. The scrutiny only figures to intensify leading up to the Belmont Stakes.

“We know we play by the rules,” O’Neill said. “It’s all about the horse. Any attention on me, I’ll just deflect and focus on the Belmont. With a little bit of luck, we could have an unbelievable time in three weeks.”

Alternation prevails at Pimlico Special

BALTIMORE -- Establishing himself as the leading older horse in the nation, Alternation swept past front-running Endorsement inside the final furlong, then held off the flying finish of Nehro to win Friday’s Grade 3, $300,000 Pimlico Special by a nose.

Ridden by Luis Quinonez and trained by Donnie Von Hemel, Alternation ran his record to 4-for-4 this year following three stakes victories at Oaklawn Park. Endorsement, the only horse in the field of nine racing without the anti-bleeding medication Lasix, held on for third.

A 5-year-old son of Distorted Humor, Alternation ran the 1 3/16-mile race in 57.60 seconds to pay $10.20. Nehro, who last year finished second in the Louisiana Derby, Arkansas Derby and Kentucky Derby, completed a $91.20 exacta.

Trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith better hope Friday’s Grade 2, $300,000 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico wasn’t a preview of today’s Preakness.

Riding Baffert’s Mamma Kimbo, the even-money favorite in a field of nine 3-year-old fillies going 1¹/ miles, Smith shook loose on the lead and set the pace to mid-stretch, when Mamma Kimbo tired and faded to finish fourth as In Lingerie, after stumbling at the start, rallied to win by 1 ¼ lengths under John Velazquez.

Disposablepleasure, like In Lingerie trained by Todd Pletcher, was along for second.

“That was a big effort to run 1-2 like that,” Pletcher said. “I’m pleasantly happy.”

With her final time a tepid 1:52.07, In Lingerie paid $9.80 keying a $61.80 exacta.

Viacom, the owner of MTV, Comedy Central and the Paramount film studio, agreed to resolve a legal dispute with Time Warner Cable, allowing cable customers to see Viacom shows on devices such as Apple’s iPad.

“All of Viacom’s programming will now be available to Time Warner Cable subscribers for in-home viewing via Internet protocol-enabled devices such as iPads,” the companies said yesterday in a joint statement. Time Warner Cable won’t be paying more to stream shows on the gadgets, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Viacom sued in 2011, seeking an order blocking Time Warner Cable from distributing Viacom programming on portable electronics. Time Warner Cable also sued, seeking a ruling from the court that its contract with Viacom allowed the distribution of content on the devices.

Shares of Viacom, based in New York, rose less than 1 percent to $47.25 yesterday. Time Warner Cable climbed less than a 1 percent as well, to $76.35.

Schumer takes aim at Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin as he proposes law to tax expats

WASHINGTON -- Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and Bob Casey (Pa.) took aim at Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin Thursday when they introduced legislation designed to tax expatriates even after they have left the country.

Saverin, who stands to make $4 billion from Facebook's expected IPO on Friday, announced that he had renounced his US citizenship last week. His move is widely believed to be a financial one.

The two senators, who called his decision "despicable," said Saverin stands to save $67 to $100 million in taxes by renouncing his citizenship.

AP

Sen. Charles Schumer at a news conference today to unveil a comprehensive plan to respond to Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin's scheme to renounce his U.S. citizenship in order to dodge taxes on profits he is expected to collect when the social-networking company goes public

"Senator Casey and I have a status update for him: pay your taxes in full," Schumer said at a press conference on Capitol Hill.

Their so-called "Ex-PATRIOT Act" would impose a mandatory 30 percent tax on American investments for those who renounce their citizenship and would also prohibit individuals like Saverin from re-entering the country.

The law -- which only applies to individuals with a net worth of over $2 million or an average income tax liability of at least $148,000 -- would not apply to non-American investments by former citizens.

Under the proposed legislation, the IRS would decide soon after an individual relinquishes his or her citizenship if the renouncement was motivated by tax avoidance. The individual would then have the opportunity to provide reasons for the renouncement, but there would be  a "strong presumption" the move was for tax purposes.

The expatriate would also have the opportunity to re-enter the country if he or she paid all back taxes.

Saverin, who was born in Brazil and became a US citizen in 1998, gave up his citizenship in Sept. 2011 and has taken up residence in Singapore, which has no capital gains tax.

"Mr. Saverin has decided to 'defriend' the United States of America just to avoid paying his taxes," Schumer said, showing his familiarity with Facebook's lingo.

A spokesman for Saverin said his citizenship renouncement had "nothing to do with taxes" and called the legislation a "reaction to perception, not reality."

Schumer scoffed at the denial, saying, "The numbers don't lie."

The senators said the law would apply to all of the approximately 3,000 individuals who have renounced their citizenship in the past 10 years.

Schumer also said the law had nothing to do with class warfare.

"This has nothing to do with [campaign against the richest one percent of Americans]," Schumer said. "Facebook, that's the American way. None of [its other top shareholders] are renouncing their citizenship to avoid paying taxes."

Drew first to go in JPMorgan Chase purge following $2.3B trading blunder

JPMorgan Chase’s chief investment officer resigned last night, becoming the first head to roll in response to the bank’s massive $2.3 billion trading blunder.

Ina Drew, 55, and at least two other executives will lose their jobs in the fallout from a scandal that has tarnished the bank’s once-sterling reputation and that of its respected CEO, Jamie Dimon, according to sources.

Drew, one of the most powerful women on Wall Street, is expected to resign immediately, sources said. She earned an estimated $15.5 million last year as head of the bank’s Chief Investment Office, which oversaw the trading unit in London that incurred many of the losses.

Achilles Macris, a London-based manager of the desk where the funky derivatives trades were authorized, and Javier Martin-Artajo, another senior trader, are also on the chopping block, according to published reports.

Sources say that the execs could also lose their bonuses to “claw backs.” A JPMorgan spokesman declined to comment.

The so-called “London Whale,” the French-born Bruno Iksil, who has been widely linked to a huge $100 billion bet on an obscure index, is not currently on the list of those to be fired, sources said.

A New Jersey native and Johns Hopkins graduate who was known for her brains as well as her appetite for risk, Drew is one of the few women to have risen to the upper echelons of Wall Street — only to fall from grace.

The firings come just days after Dimon dropped the $2 billion trading bombshell in a hastily arranged conference call on Thursday. A contrite Dimon referred to the loss as “sloppy” and the bank’s handling of it as “poorly executed” and “poorly monitored.”

Sources said the bank’s risk manager, John Hogan, was one of the first execs to highlight the risky trade and forge a plan of action.

Yesterday, in an interview on “Meet the Press,” Dimon said he was “dead wrong” in dismissing reports questioning the risky hedging strategies and said he had given regulators ammunition to impose tougher regulations on Wall Street. “This is a very unfortunate and inopportune time to have this kind of mistake,” he said.

The dismissal of Drew comes as JPMorgan’s trades are being examined by regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission and London’s regulatory body, the Financial Services Authority.

JPMorgan shares fell nearly 9.3 percent on Friday to $36.96, losing much of what some investors refer to as the “Dimon premium.”

The King holds court in crucial 2nd period

headshotMike Vaccaro
Follow Mike on Twitter

As the delirium multiplied around him, as the big old rink prepared for a massive exhale, Henrik Lunqvist made certain not to celebrate even one-tenth of a second early. The Rangers bench was already prepared to bolt onto the ice, the Capitals already bore the look of almost-but-not-quite.

Lundqvist? He kept his eye lasered on the puck while keeping an ear out for the final horn. And when it finally blasted, when it groaned and officially nudged the Rangers up a rung in this NHL Tournament, into the conference finals for the first time since the first year of the second Clinton Administration, then Lundqvist was something to see.

ICED CAP: Defenseman Marc Staal stops short in front of rookie goalie Braden Holtby and sprays ice in his face during the Rangers’ 2-1 victory over the Capitals in Game 7.

ICED CAP: Defenseman Marc Staal stops short in front of rookie goalie Braden Holtby and sprays ice in his face during the Rangers’ 2-1 victory over the Capitals in Game 7.

He pumped his arms and raised his stick, looking the way Tiger Woods used to look after draining an impossible Sunday putt, a blue sweater for Lundqvist instead of a blood-red collared shirt. Lundqvist has been everything for the Rangers from the moment he showed up out of the Swedish Elitserien, 97 games over .500 for his regular-season career.

Nobody has had to tell him that the winning percentage is a bit less gaudy in the postseason. He knows. He was there for all 26 losses. So he was going to savor this 23rd win, this 2-1 series-clincher over the Capitals, this night when he was the biggest reason why the Rangers live to host the Devils tomorrow night in the conference finals.

“I won’t lie to you,” he said, smiling. “I was nervous.”

We will have to trust him on that because to the naked eye he looked like a master chessman, in charge not only of his own crease, not only of his own teammates but also of where the puck was going. The second period, for now at least, was his finest hour, the greatest 20 minutes of his American hockey life.

For so much of the period, the Capitals played as desperate teams must, bringing wave after wave at Lundqvist, rush after rush. The Rangers didn’t take a single penalty during the period yet for long stretches it seemed they were playing a man down, maybe two, the Caps taking target practice at Lundqvist, playing keep-away.

“I knew that’s how they would be,” he said. “I knew that’s how they would attack me. This is the seventh game, there’s no tomorrow and they were a goal down.”

On the Capitals came. On they rushed. On they pushed.

“I thought he was getting tired,” Caps coach Dale Hunter said. “We kept him moving from side to side a lot out there.”

Lundqvist agreed.

“I was exhausted,” he said, “but I knew I couldn’t lose focus. I’m not out there hitting people like the other guys so I have to stay in it a different way.”

He was brilliant. This isn’t surprising, of course. Lundqvist is nominated for both the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goalie and the Hart Trophy as its most valuable player. He didn’t earn those nods in a lottery.

The only blemish came on a goal by Roman Hamrlik with under 10 minutes left in the game, cutting a 2-0 lead in half, but even that seemed to elevate his concentration; the Caps weren’t getting another one past him. Not without sorcery or trickery. Lundqvist would not relent until that final groan of the horn. And then the joy was palpable and uncontainable.

“What a great, great feeling,” he said. “What a terrific game to be a part of.”

Tomorrow night, he will face the Devils, the team against whom he made his NHL debut in 2005 (a 3-2 overtime loss), against whom he earned his first victory five days later, a team backstopped, forever, by Martin Brodeur, who just may be the best to ever play the position.

Eighteen years ago, Brodeur introduced himself as a gifted cornerstone by nearly foiling the Rangers’ march to the Cup, an epic conference final that will shadow every second of this series. Eighteen years ago, as Brodeur was torturing the Rangers, Lundqvist was a 12-year-old boy in Are, Sweden, who wasn’t exactly staying up at night for transcontinental updates of the series that kept both sides of the Hudson awake for two weeks straight.

Things are different this time around.

“There’s so much work ahead of us,” Lundqvist said last night, which is only true because of the work he already has done.

Yanks send Nunez to Triple-A

Manager Joe Girardi says Eduardo Nunez’s strongest value to the Yankees is as a shortstop.

Yet, when the Yankees sent Nunez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre yesterday, it looked and sounded like Nunez is headed for trade bait.

“Our thought is that he will be an everyday shortstop at some point,’’ Girardi said of Nunez, who will be 25 next month and will have one more minor league option after this season. “That’s what we want him to concentrate on. That’s where his true value is.’’

With Derek Jeter signed for this year and next and Jeter holding a player option for 2014, it’s hard to see Jeter playing another position.

A SHORT STAY? After struggling in the field this season, Eduardo Nunez is headed to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and could be on the trading block.

Bill Kostroun

A SHORT STAY? After struggling in the field this season, Eduardo Nunez is headed to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and could be on the trading block.

So, Nunez’s biggest value might be on the trade market. Teams have long coveted Nunez’s bat but have been wary of his defense. He made six errors at third and 14 at short last year.

He made two very costly errors Thursday night at third base and Girardi used Jayson Nix as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning.

“Right now it was the right thing to do,’’ general manager Brian Cashman said of Nunez, who hit .294 (15-for-51) with five RBIs in 20 games. “The bottom line is that it’s hard to find players with the ability and tools he has. Moving all over the field was not helpful.’’

YANKEES BOX SCORE

Nunez, a natural shortstop, started one game at second, five at third, five at short and one in left field and his glove looked rigid in all places.

“We feel it’s important for him to play every day at short again,’’ Girardi said. “I am not saying if the kid gets recalled I won’t play him in left in a pinch. We talked about maybe we asked the kid to do too much and let’s get him back [to short].’’

Nunez wouldn’t be the first shortstop to go someplace else or switch positions because of Jeter’s death grip on the position since 1996.

Cristian Guzman, Erick Almonte, D’Angelo Jimenez and Alfonso Soriano were either dealt or moved to another position because of Jeter.

With Nunez gone, Nix will serve as the backup shortstop and second baseman. Chavez will back up at first and third.

Jeter appreciates the difficulty Nunez faced trying to play everywhere.

“I never had to do it but it’s hard enough to play one [position]. You don’t see too many young guys [do it]. When you are younger, you are used to playing every day, it’s hard enough not to play every day. But then to play sparingly at one, two, three, four five different positions, that’s tough to do,’’ Jeter said.

Jeter believes getting comfortable at multiple positions would be tough and that Nunez was stunned to be demoted.

“It’s probably just not being comfortable. I don’t want to speak on his behalf, but I would assume just not playing every day is tough to do,’’ Jeter said. “It’s always a shock. Me and Mo got sent down on the same day. It was a shock. It was tough to deal with. It’s nothing that’s easy to do. He needs to play. That’s the bottom line.’’

TRUE BLUE: With career coming to a close, Dahldorf reflects on time at Poly

Every other week this spring season, Jessica Dahldorf will take us inside the Poly Prep girls lacrosse team. In her exclusive diary on NYPost.com, the Northwestern-bound midfielder will give us an inside look at the Blue Devils quest to return to the NYSAISAA title game and bring home a championship.

This is an exciting time for Poly Prep seniors.

With just finishing classes last Friday, we are really narrowing in on our final three weeks. These next three weeks will mark the end of our high school years’ memories, and will linger with us as we begin to set off on our next journeys. As athletes at Poly Prep, this is our last time to play together and shine. I am sad to think that each game brings us closer to the last time the seniors step out on the lacrosse field representing Poly Prep together.

Denis Gostev

Poly Prep's Jessica Dahldorf will see her high school career come to an end soon.

There are five seniors on our lacrosse team that will soon be preparing to go in different directions and to different colleges. I will look back over the years and enjoy the memories of all of us growing up together on this team. I will always remember the killer instinct that Sam Domurat brought to scoring, and the speed which our lefty, Rosie Silber-Marker, could catch and cut. Clara Miles has one of the most powerful shots I have ever seen, and Nina Beigelman has an amazing work ethic and energy every time she walks out on the field. In addition to the playing memories, I will also remember all of the laughs, inside stories and tears we shared together.

I will also cherish the memories of playing against the top talent in our league. Trish and Kelly Gorman from Pelham, N.Y., representing Hackley are great opponents. When I moved from Pelham to Brooklyn in sixth grade, I never thought I would have to face my fellow elementary school soccer friends on the lacrosse field as seniors.

Trish is an offensive threat with amazing stick skills and Kelly is a wall in the goal making it hard for any offensive player to get an easy shot. But not only stumbling on my childhood friends who turned out to be great players, I have also been lucky to play against top athletes Lindsay Picard and Isabella Bertagna representing Riverdale. The wins and losses we have together will be the games we remember the longest.

In the last stretch of the lacrosse season, we are not playing for ourselves, nor are the underclassmen playing for the seniors, we are playing for each other.

Last week we played Fieldston. At this game, we were charged with four yellow cards in the first half. This game was a challenge for our team, but we rallied together to win in overtime. On Wednesday we played a tough game against division leader Hackley. We started off in a deep hole (down 12-3 within the first 15 minutes).

Although we rallied back outscoring Hackley 8-1 in the remaining minutes, there was not enough time, and we lost the game 13-11. The efforts played in both games highlighted the commitment of the entire team and our belief in one another.

And now when I look back on all of the seasons we have played together, I feel so lucky to have found myself surrounded by so many talented athletes.

Check back with Jessica Dahldorf every other Thursday during the season. Her final diary will run May 24.

Giroux banned for Game 5

PHILADELPHIA — The victim accepted the perp’s punishment — grudgingly.

“I kind of see it, but it’s exactly what the league is trying to eliminate,” the Devils’ Dainius Zubrus told The Post last night after the playoffs’ leading scorer, Claude Giroux, was suspended for his Flyers’ do-or-die Game 5 of the Eastern Conference playoffs tonight.

The NHL suspended Giroux one game yesterday for slamming Zubrus in the side of the head with his shoulder in Game 4 in Newark on Sunday.

“I understand why the decision was made. In the last series, [the Penguins’ James] Neal hit Giroux, who wasn’t hurt and was able to continue. I think this was the same idea,” Zubrus said, referring to Neal’s one-game ban.

The suspension adds suspense for Game 5 of the series the Devils can finish tonight. The Flyers lost their main man, but they gained a rallying cause as they try to avert elimination.

“A suspension like that always rallies a team,” Devils goalie Martin Brodeur said.

But Giroux isn’t some cannon fodder sitting out. He leads the playoffs with eight goals and nine assists, but is only 2-1-3 in the four games against New Jersey, though he had a goal and an assist in Game 4.

League disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan noted Giroux had a clean record and Zubrus returned to action in limiting the suspension to one game.

* Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov was on-ice for nine of the first 10 Florida goals in the first three games of the playoffs. He stood minus-2 then, and has gone plus-7 since.

* Feisty Flyer Scott Hartnell stands minus-6 in the last three games. That takes some doing. ... Devils center Ryan Carter is expected to return after missing Game 4 because of an illness.

Mets SS Tejada likely headed for DL

After Ruben Tejada suffered a strained right quadriceps yesterday, a Mets source told The Post that MRI exam results on the shortstop were “not good’’ and that a trip to the disabled list was “very likely” though not a given.

With two outs in the fourth inning of the Mets’ 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks, Tejada’s spike caught in the clay as he legged out a bunt single. He stumbled onto first base, laying motionless for a minute before being helped off the field and replaced by Justin Turner. The status of Tejada, who also sustained facial bruises on the play, remains very much up in the air, subject to further evaluation today.

“The final decision won’t be made until he’s evaluated. Tejada still thinks he can play in a few days,’’ a source told The Post.

Manager Terry Collins said Tejada did not believe the injury was as severe as the groin woes that cost him a week in spring training.

METS BOX SCORE

“I don’t know how bad it’s going to be. If they think it’s going to be five, six days, we’d probably have to make some move to get somebody here,’’ said Collins, who said the Mets could go up to four days with Turner at shortstop and David Wright as the backup.

“I can catch it and throw it to first,’’ said Turner, who made his third major league appearance at short. “I don’t know if I’ll be doing anything spectacular.”

The Mets will bring a player, likely Jordany Valdespin, to Philadelphia today for insurance. Valdespin was sent down to Triple-A on Saturday and cannot be activated for 10 days unless another player goes on the DL. Utility infielder Ronny Cedeno, on the DL since April 23 with rib strain, becomes eligible to be activated later in the week.

* Daniel Murphy stroked a two-RBI single in the first. He was 7-for-12 in the series.

“He’s such a good hitter,’’ Collins said. “He’s going to hit 12-to-15 homers, we know that. What he does is he puts the bat on the ball. He has a chance to drive runs in.”

* Jason Bay’s ribs are still sore, and the left fielder will not be ready for a rehab assignment “for a while,” according to Collins.

* Chris Young (shoulder) will pitch Thursday in St. Lucie, slated to throw 75 to 80 pitches. The Mets are planning to have Young make three or four minor league starts so he can be ready by the end of the month.

* Reliever D.J. Carrasco, out since March with a sprained ankle, was activated from the DL and said he hopes to “redeem” himself after struggling to a 6.02 ERA last year. He said he has movement back on his sinker and regained his lost velocity.

nfl: Union wants Goodell out of appeal

The players association wants to remove Roger Goodell from the process when four players file appeals of their suspensions for the Saints’ bounty program.

The union filed a grievance challenging the commissioner’s authority to suspend the current and former players who took part in the bounties from 2009-11.

The complaint claims Goodell is prohibited from punishing players for any aspect of a pay-for-hits program occurring before the new collective bargaining agreement was signed last August.

Kentucky Derby too close to call

headshotRay Kerrison

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On the eve of the Kentucky Derby, I don’t have the faintest idea who is going to win. But then, neither does anyone else.

When a master craftsman like D. Wayne Lukas, who has won 13 Triple Crown classics, studies the 20-horse field and throws up his arms in bewilderment, what chance does an apprentice like I have?

“It’s so deep and talented, one of the best fields I can remember,” Lukas said. “I can’t pick a favorite, I can’t pick a winner.”

Mike Harrington, an old trainer who will saddle Creative Cause, said: “Any one of 10 horses could win it.”

‘MEISTER’ RIGHT: Bodemeister trains on the track yesterday for tomorrow’s Kentucky Derby.

KENTUCKY DERBY BETTOR'S GUIDE

So this 138th running of the greatest horse race in America becomes the Dart Board Derby, where throwing a dart may make as much sense as analyzing form, pedigree, speed figures, distance and jockeys.

The problem is that modern racehorses — fragile, over medicated and sparingly raced — come to the Derby with so few races on their resumes that nobody can realistically evaluate their potential. It’s only when they lay it down in the Derby that the chaff is separated from the wheat.

Compounding this Derby is the uncertain pace at which it will be run. With a tearaway speedster such as Trinniberg in the field, the race could be run at suicidal fractions, effectively nullifying the other quality speed horses such as Bodemeister, Hansen, Union Rags, Gemologist, Take Charge Indy and set it up for a late rushing plodder.

But if Trinniberg sets sane fractions, the back markers will not have a prayer against the talented bunch up front.

So, what to do? I’m looking to cover both contingencies.

Easily the most impressive performance by any horse prepping for the Derby was Bodemeister’s rout of the Arkansas Derby, which he won by nearly 10 lengths, beating one of the best horses in the country, Secret Circle. His speed superiority towers over the field. He might be anything.

Harrington said: “He’s a freak.”

He will need to be to overcome the Derby’s most enduring jinx. Bodemeister never raced as a two-year-old and no horse like that has won the Derby since 1882. But the old rules don’t seem to apply today, so I’m going with the freak.

All horses have negatives. Consider everyone’s favorite, Union Rags. In his two biggest assignments, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Florida Derby, he found a way to lose. He will be ridden by Julien Leparoux, a French-born jockey, gifted and tough, but who likes to take his horses out the back, as they say. That style does not suit the front-pushing Union Rags.

Hansen won the Breeders’ Juvenile, but has not done much since except win the Gotham, a non-event in Derby history. He’s running the same speed figures as a two-year-old. He has not moved forward.

Gemologist is flawless. He has won all five starts, two at Churchill Downs. His speed figures have risen with every start, but his wide post 15 will test him. He comes from the same firm, WinStar Farms, who won the 2010 Derby with Super Saver.

The farm’s president, Elliot Walden, said, “Gemologist is the best horse we have ever brought to the Derby.” His opinion carries weight.

Then there are all the other contenders: Dullahan, who won the Blue Grass (he’s won two on synthetics, lost all three on dirt); Creative Cause, a real trouper who lost the Santa Anita Derby by a nose; Take Charge Indy, who ground out the Florida Derby by a length; I’ll Have Another, who won the Santa Anita Derby; Daddy Nose Best, who won the Sunland Derby; Done Talking, who took the Illinois Derby; Alpha who just missed the Wood Memorial, and Went the Day Well, who upset the Spiral.

No wonder the experts are confused and the morning line favorite is 4-1.

Still that may open the door for a longshot to spring yet another Derby upset. A horse like El Padrino, who boasts better Beyer speed figures than the vaunted Union Rags; Sabercat, who flew home to get third behind Bodemeister and Secret Circle in the Arkansas Derby; Daddy Long Legs, who won the Dubai Derby, even the forlorn Optimizer, who jetted home for second in the Rebel.

This is a Derby that appears to defy rational handicapping. Mister, hand me the dart!
