BOSTON -- "Mad Men," now in its fifth season on AMC, is enjoying a big ratings boost thanks to Netflix, says the company's content boss, Ted Sarandos.
This year's debut episode attracted 3.5 million viewers, up more than a million from last season's 2.4 million average.
Sarandos, speaking at a panel at the cable industry's annual convention in Boston, took credit for the bump, citing Netflix viewership of the show's earlier seasons.
"These are people who had four years to watch the show, and didn't," he said, suggesting that they tuned in for the fifth season after catching up on Netflix.
Stories like this serve to bolster Netflix's claim that it can help TV networks garner viewers.
Sarandos' comments came as he was defending Netflix from the flip side of that argument -- that some networks, like Viacom's Nickelodeon, are being hurt because Netflix is making their content available online.
