KANSAS CITY — Their eyes told a different story than their mouths delivered.
In the gloom of the Yankees’ clubhouse last night following the news that Mariano Rivera has a torn right ACL, the players talked about having to step up and carry on without the game’s all-time saves leader.
It was what athletes do whenever disaster strikes. Yet, their eyes weren’t in sync with their tongues.
“It’s tough, but we will try to do whatever we can to fill the void of the best closer in the history of baseball,’’ CC Sabathia said in low voice.
Alex Rodriguez was shook up.

THE FINAL SAVE? Mariano Rivera recorded his last save on Monday against the Orioles. It could be the final save of his career after tearing his ACL last night in Kansas City.
“It’s hard to talk about it tonight, but we are the New York Yankees and nobody is going to feel sorry for us,’’ he said as he stared across the room at nobody. “Mo is Mo and our job, the 25 guys, is to show up and win games.’’
That’s a chore that became much tougher when Rivera suffered the injury shagging batting practice fly balls, though David Robertson seems poised to fill Rivera’s shoes.
“I am not a doctor but I wouldn’t be surprised if he is back here this year,’’ Derek Jeter said.
Yet, that was after Jeter said of his injured buddy, “There will never be another one like him. It’s hard, I know how much he cares about doing his job.’’
Robertson, the favorite to land Rivera’s ninth-inning gig, initially thought the fun-loving Rivera was playing with everybody.
“I thought it was funny and then I realized he was really injured and down,’’ Robertson said. “There was nothing I could do but stand there and watch.’’
Said Joe Girardi: “It’s not what you want but the season is not over. We have to find a way to overcome it.’’
