Like most young boys, Jon is fascinated by guns: toy ones, real ones.
One night he overhears his father and mother arguing about a gun that's hidden in their house. The next day he sets out to find it. Sure enough, he discovers a heavy box under his parents' bed, and there it is — a real gun! He feels the cold metal in his hands...

Based on a true story, Real Guns is neither pro or anti-gun. It argues that parents and children must be clear about the need for acting responsibly with guns and other dangerous weapons. It also deals with the sensitive issues surrounding the impact of war on returned veterans and their families, helping children understand what their parents have gone, and will continue to go through, when they have been at war.
